Goals:

Art Deco aesthetic, Installable font files use on press

Description:

I searched high and low for just the right faces and font families to use for the 2009 NC Pride Guide and really never found the perfect forms. The first redraw of existing font forms was inspired by Mostra, and while the simple Illustrator vectors were fine to use for cover artwork, the type system needed to be extensible to changing headline text within the publication. I drew all vector forms for both Litho Deco and Rocket Deco in Illustrator and imported the shapes into TypeTool for kerning and final font-file production for use on press.

Blackletter typography generated with long-exposure photography

Description:

Last summer, a friend of mine was developing a love for typography and its calligraphic forms. He was in the habit of writing anything he could think of in different blackletter variations, and I really wanted to explore the forms with him but also create something new so that the exercise could generate a new aesthetic rather than just perfecting an existing craft. It took about a dozen attempts at each letterform to settle on a usable set of shapes, but what came out of the collaboration was a really beautiful set of forms.

Litho Deco

Client:

North Carolina Pride Guide 2009

Goals:

Art Deco aesthetic, Installable font files use on press

Description:

This font is a recreation of Aeronaut by David Occhino with altered proportions and a more conservative palette of shapes. The theme established for NC Pride 2009 was Art Deco, so the Rockafellar/Rocketeer aesthetic served as an easily-recognizable and American-inspired visual cue.
